Exercise 10.3.4

Show that the tangent line at a point ( x 1 , y 1 ) on the first parabola in (10.9) has slope given by

m = b y 1 1 2 a .

Answers

Proof. The equation of the tangent T at the point M 1 ( x 1 , y 1 ) to the parabola whose equation is

f ( x , y ) = 2 bx ( y 1 2 a ) 2 = 0 ,

is

0 = ∂f ∂x ( x 1 , y 1 ) ( x x 1 ) + ∂f ∂y ( x 1 , y 1 ) ( y y 1 ) , = 2 b ( x x 1 ) 2 ( y 1 1 2 a ) ( y y 1 ) ,

so the equation of T is

T : bx ( y 1 1 2 a ) y b x 1 + ( y 1 1 2 a ) y 1 = 0 .

The slope of T is

m = b y 1 1 2 a .
