The e distinct f -periods are the ( f , λ i ) , i = 1 , , e , thus

i = 1 e ( f , λ i ) = i = 1 e a [ λ i ] H f ζ p a = a 1 i e [ λ i ] H f ζ p a = a ( pℤ ) ζ p a = 1 ,

since a ( pℤ ) ζ p a = 0 . □
