Problem 5.4.13 ($D_{8n} \not \simeq D_{4n} \times Z_2$)

Prove that D 8 n is not isomorphic to D 4 n × Z 2 .

Answers

Proof. Here D 8 n = ⟨ r , s ⟩ , where | r | = 4 n , so D 8 n contains an element of order 4 n .

Every element h of D 4 n satisfies h 2 n = 1 , and every element k of Z 2 satisfies h 2 = 1 , a fortiori k 2 n = 1 , therefore every element x = ( h , k ) of D 4 n × Z 2 satisfies x 2 n = 1 , so D 4 n × Z 2 has no element of order 4 n .

This shows that D 8 n is not isomorphic to D 4 n × Z 2 . □
