Figure $1.5$ a shows $\frac{1}{2} v+\frac{1}{2} w$. Mark the points $\frac{3}{4} v+\frac{1}{4} w$ and $\frac{1}{4} v+\frac{1}{4} w$ and $v+w$.

The point $\frac{3}{4} v+\frac{1}{4} w$ is three-fourths of the way to $v$ starting from $w$. The vector $\frac{1}{4} \boldsymbol{v}+\frac{1}{4} \boldsymbol{w}$ is halfway to $\boldsymbol{u}=\frac{1}{2} \boldsymbol{v}+\frac{1}{2} \boldsymbol{w}$. The vector $\boldsymbol{v}+\boldsymbol{w}$ is $2 \boldsymbol{u}$ (the far corner of the parallelogram).
