$(1, 1)$ perpendicular to $(1, 5) - c (1, 1)$ if $(1, 1) \cdot (1, 5) - c (1, 1) \cdot (1, 1) = 6 - 2 c = 0$ or $c = 3; v \cdot (w - c v) = 0$ if $c = v \cdot w ∕ v \cdot v$ . Subtracting $c v$ is the key to constructing a perpendicular vector.
