(a): If $B = - A$ then certainly $A + B =$ zero matrix is not invertible.
(b): We have $A = [\begin{matrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{matrix}], B = [\begin{matrix} 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{matrix}]$
are both singular but $A + B = I$ is invertible.
