A $p$-dimensional and a $q$-dimensional subspace of $R^n$ share at least a line if $p+q>n$. (The $p+q$ basis vectors of $V$ and $W$ cannot be independent, so same combination of the basis vectors of $V$ is also a combination of the basis vectors of $W$.)
