If $A$ has dependent columns, then $A^{T}A$ is not invertable and the usual formula $P=$ $A{\left(A^{T}A\right)}^{-1}{A}^T$ will fail. Replace $A$ in that formula by the matrix $B$ that keeps only the pivot columns of $A$.
