When $a$ and $b$ are not orthogonal, the projections onto these lines do not add to the projection onto the plane of $a$ and $b$. We must use the orthogonal $A$ and $B$ (or orthonormal $q_1$ and $q_2$ ) to be allowed to add projections on those lines.
