The format of the variance $σ^{2}$ is exactly the format of $V$ in problem 1, and from there we know that $a_{i} = \frac{a_{i}}{\sum a_{i}}$ optimizes $σ^{2}$ , so $p = \frac{a}{a + b}$ and $1 - p = \frac{b}{a + b}$ .
