$c_{P} = (1 + 2) ∕ 2 = 1.5$ , $c_{Q} = (3 + 4) ∕ 2 = 3.5$ . So we have

$D_{P} = {(1 - c_{P})}^{2} + {(2 - c_{P})}^{2} = 0.25 + 0.25 = 0.5$ and $D_{Q} = {(3 - c_{Q})}^{2} + {(4 - c_{Q})}^{2} = 0.5$ , so $D = D_{P} + D_{Q} = 1$ .

The k-means algorithm will still assign 1,2 to $P$ and 3,4 to $Q$ in the next step.
