Since the domains of the functions $f$ and $g$ are not specified explicitly, we assume that the domains of both functions are their maximal intervals of existence, i.e., $(-\infty ,2)$. In that case, the functions above are equal because they are represented by the same formula; the only difference is that the dependent and the independent variables are designated with different letters.
