Suppose that a , b , c , d and that ( a , b ) = ( c , d ) = 1 .

If ( a b ) + ( c d ) = an integer, show that b = ± d .

Proof. If a b + c d = n ( a b = c d = 1 ) , then ad + bc = nbd , thus d bc , d c = 1 , which implies d b . Similarly b d . Then d = ± b . □
