Exercise 10.11

Show that the origin is a singular point on the curve defined by y 2 x 3 = 0 .

Answers

Proof. If f ( x , y ) = y 2 x 3 , then

∂f ∂x = 3 x 2 , ∂f ∂y = 2 y ,

thus ∂f ∂x ( 0 , 0 ) = ∂f ∂y ( 0 , 0 ) = 0 . This proves that the origin is a singular point for the curve defined by f . □
