Proof. Let v1,,vm denote a basis of V . The dimension of range T is the same as the dimension of span (Tv1, ,Tvm). So if the matrix of T has less than dim range T nonzero entries, it follows from the defintion of M(T) that the list Tv1,,Tvm has less than dim range T non-zero vectors, which is not possible, because its span is range T. □
