Proof. Applying the Gram-Schmidt procedure to the basis $(1, 1, 0, 0), (1, 1, 1, 2)$ we get $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} (1, 1, 0, 0), \frac{1}{\sqrt{5}} (0, 0, 1, 2)$ . Using the formula from part (i) in 6.55 to calculate $P_{U} (1, 2, 3, 4)$ , we get

P_{U} (1, 2, 3, 4) = \frac{3}{2} (1, 1, 0, 0) + \frac{11}{5} (0, 0, 1, 2) .
