Proof. By the Polar Decomposition (7.45), there exists an isometry S L(V ) such that T = STT. Taking the adjoint of each side, we get

T = (STT) = (TT)S = TTS,

where the last equality follows because TT is self-adjoint. This yields the desired result, because S is also an isometry. □
