\begin{proof}
The vector that emanates from $(a,b)$ and terminates at the midpoint should be $\frac{1}{2}(c-a,d-b)$. Thus, the coordinate of the midpoint will be $$(a,b)+\frac{1}{2}(c-a,d-b)=\left(\frac{a+c}{2},\frac{b+d}{2}\right).$$
