From the equation given in the question, it’s easy to deduce that $f (0) = a_{0}$ . And by definition, we also know that $f (t) = \det (A - tI)$ and so $f (0) = \det (A)$ . So $A$ is invertible if and only if $a_{0} = \det (A) \neq 0$ .
