Exercise 7.13

Answers

(a)
w50 is generated using data in Dtrain, which has nothing to do with Dval, so Eval(w50) is an unbiased estimate of Eout(w50)
(b)
From formula 2.1, with M = 1, N = 50, δ = 0.1, we have Eout(w50) Eval(w50) + 1 2Nln 2M δ = Eval(w50) + 1 100ln 2 0.1 = 0.05 + 0.2995732273553991 0.35.
(c)
We can’t bound Eout with Etrain because we don’t know the number the hypothesis used to create w50. But for validation set, we first fixed the w50 from training, then calculate the Eval, so there’s only one hypothesis.
